Here are a few additional stats, computed for players who played at least 15 games the past year. Variance is a measure of the consistency of your game, in terms of finishing position. If you went out in third place, every single time, then your variance would be 0.0. (i.e. No variance.) All statistics given (e.g. Average Finish) are computed per game played.

NAME GAMES PLAYED VARIANCE AVERAGE FINISH AVERAGE POINTS EARNED
Mark 51 1.89 3.4 17.64
Shawn Ro. 17 2.05 6.3 12.37
Derrick 38 2.23 3.9 17.15
Patrick 25 2.38 4.2 16.40
Valery 25 2.48 6.0 13.04
Aaron 51 2.58 4.1 16.31
Beth 19 2.81 4.4 17.27
Chris 42 2.94 3.9 17.54
Brian 51 3.03 4.5 16.07

Here’s that same data, in graphical form. The black square is the players average finish. The vertical line shows the range that player tends to finish in. The taller the vertical line, the higher that player’s variance (i.e. the wider their finishing range.)

Points-paying games

The first two games on all regular scheduled nights will pay points. Subsequent games, if any, will not pay points unless otherwise announced.

The GSOP points formula is:

Points = 10 * [sqrt(#entrants)/sqrt(place)] (Points equal ten times the square root of the number of entrants, divided by the square root of your finish.) Points take into account the size of the starting field and the place of your finish. Any player who participates in a game will always receive at least 10 points, even if he or she is the first eliminated. There’s been a suggestion to look at a different points system. You’ll find discussion of the proposed changes, here.

Chopping

In the case of a chop, the pot will be divided in the manner decided by the players chopping. GSOP points will be distributed according to stack size.

GSOP Pot

Players participating in any GSOP points-paying games will be required to pay $5 per game. Players may no longer opt out. The host will receive $20 from the night’s GSOP pot.

Prizes

(1420)
gsop2014prizes
The final GSOP prize pool will be divided into two parts. 30% will go to the GSOP Player of the Year: the player with the most GSOP points. The remaining 70% will constitute the prize pool for the year end Main Event free-roll.

The 2014 Main Event – January 3, 2015

The 2014 GSOP will culminate in a deep stack free-roll – The Main Event – for 70% of the final pot. The Main Event will take place after the last regular game of the year. There will be no re-buys or add-ons. Starting chips are based on GSOP points.

You’ll find the current points database online, here.
